Easy Homemade Naan Bread

I always buy naan from Trader Joe's without even giving a thought to try to make my own. It seems "exotic" and always just seemed like an item that you buy instead of attempting to make. After making it once, I will never buy it again.

Homemade naan is extremely easy! I was shocked at how simple the recipe was and how fast I had the bread made. It is pretty much a basic dough recipe with a little bit of Greek yogurt and olive oil added. So simple and delicious.

I served this naan with homemade baked falafel and a tomato cucumber salad. It was such a fresh dinner and the naan made it complete. This bread is perfect to use as a vessel to eat falafel with a little bit of Greek yogurt smeared on top.

Since this recipe makes about 8-10 pieces of naan, you most likely will have leftovers. Last night I decided to use my leftover naan to make mini BBQ chicken pizza. I used leftover BBQ pulled chicken, a little bit extra BBQ sauce and some cheddar cheese. It was the perfect and easy Friday night dinner.

I urge you to make your own naan for your next dinner. It is so easy and extremely delicious. There are also so many possibilities that you can use the naan for that you'll probably get multiple uses out of it. Enjoy!

Easy Homemade Naan Bread:
(original recipe from: http://www.beingcheapiseasy.com)

2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup warm water
2 1/2 cups flour (I used 1 1/2 cups all purpose and 1 cup white whole wheat)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup olive oil
1/3 cup plain fat free Greek yogurt
1 egg
  1. In a large bowl mix together yeast, sugar and water. Let sit for about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in the yogurt, olive oil and egg.
  3. In a medium bowl whisk together the flour and salt.
  4. Slowly stir the dry ingredients into the wet with a wooden spoon, about 1/2 cup at a time. Stir with the spoon until mostly combined and turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for about 3-5 minutes until the dough forms a completely smooth ball.
  5. Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise for 45 minutes in a warm place. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and divide it into 8-10 equal sized balls.
  6. Spray a skillet with non-stick spray and heat over medium high heat. Roll the balls of dough into thin discs, about 1/4 inch thick, and cook one at a time in the skillet. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side and transfer to a plate. Make sure to spray the skillet after each piece of naan. Serve and enjoy!
